Wildlife Rehabilitation Intern

The Rideau Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, located near North Gower and Kemptville, rehabilitates about 400 orphaned wild mammals annually, such as raccoons, skunks, groundhogs, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, weasels, porcupines, muskrats and foxes. Wildlife interns provide direct care for orphaned wild mammals, and perform other related duties. Internships are full-time voluntary positions, for a minimum of three months, maximum of six months. Interning takes place between April 1 and September 30. Stipends and housing are provided. Ideal interns are mature, hardworking, reliable, enthusiastic, conscientious individuals who will commit to their full term. Applicants must be 19 years of age or older. Work is often fast-paced, repetitive and requires working outdoors in all kinds of weather. Interns should be able to perform physically demanding tasks, such as lifting. All interns will be required to provide proof of vaccination for tetanus and rabies. Most applicants are involved in biology, wildlife, environmental or veterinary-related studies, but we will consider all applicants who demonstrate an enthusiastic, hardworking attitude and who will become an integral member of our rehabilitation team. Previous experience is not necessary (though an asset), as we provide on-the-job training. Public transportation is not available at the wildlife centre. The Volunteer will offer one hour a week according to his or her availability, between Monday and Friday, after the children's school hours, during the school year. The Ottawa MS Walk is 2km or 5km walk in support of individuals and their families living with multiple sclerosis. There are over 1500 Walkers who participate in this one day event. This year's Walk occurs at the Jean Talon Building at 170 Tunney's Pasture on April 25, 2010.

There are a variety of volunteer positions available and we need your help!

Balloon Inflator 7:00 am – 1:00 pm

You will be inflating helium balloons and making the MS Walk fun and festive!

Preparing and setting out breakfast. No dishes required!

Check-in Runner 7:30 am - 10:30 am

Collect completed pledge envelopes from check-in volunteers and take to the counting room. Also assist check-in volunteers with getting necessary t-shirt sizes etc as walkers check-in.

Check point 9:30 am -12:00 pm

Assisting at the two checkpoints along the route to ensure MS Walkers get drinks, snacks and information (map routes, where the washrooms are, etc)

Cheering Section 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Help send off and welcome back MS Walkers. Please bring any items you wish, such as noise makers, signs, pom-poms etc

Face Painter/Kid Area 8:30 am -1:00 pm

Paint faces with products supplied by the Ottawa Chapter. Temporary tattoos may also be used.

Floater 7:00 am -11:00 am; 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Flexibility is your middle name! You will have the important task of filling in wherever necessary!

Help direct MS Walkers to parking areas and traffic control in parking areas. You will be ensuring that only vehicles or authorized people will enter appropriate parking and drop-off areas. Orange safety vest is provided. ** Must be 18 yrs or older

Photographer 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

Capture the MS Walk digitally or on film. Take candid and portrait shots of volunteers, site and Walkers.

Route Marshall – 9:30 am – 1:00 pm

Make sure the Walk route is safe, fun and no one gets lost! Assist MS Walkers along the route by making sure they stay along the designated walk route.

Route Signage 7:30 am – 1:00 pm

Assist Route coordinator with putting up and taking down all the route signs for the event. Put up all external signage around the event location.

Site set-up (Saturday, April 24) 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Assist staff in setting up for the event. This can include, but not limited to setting up tents, arranging tables and chairs, hanging banners and setting up event fencing. A staff member will be on-site to help you determine what needs to be done.

Site Take Down (Sunday) 12:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Help tear down the walk site which can include but not limited to taking down tents, tables, chairs, banners, and picking up trash. Assist with loading of all supplies into trucks.

TeamMS Photographer 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

You will be helping to run our TeamMS table. Take pictures of registered teams and give team captains their TeamMS Thank You Gift. You will also be a key player in deciding which team will win Walk awards! Cameras provided or feel free to use your own.

Volunteer Check-in 6:30 am – 10:00 am; 10:00 am -1:00 pm

Check-in all volunteers and direct them to their assigned area. Give each volunteer their t-shirt, make sure they turn in the volunteer application/waiver form if applicable and answer any question volunteers have throughout the day. This location is also the lost and found area for the Walk.

We Need Your Help: To launch the inaugural Bikes for Beats we are creating a visual representation of various elements of the event. We hope you can participate in this fun photo op. The African-Caribbean Women's Support Group meets the third Saturday of each month from 12pm to 6pm. The women from the group are welcome to bring their children with them but need help with keeping an eye on them so that they can focus on their group activities. Childcare Volunteers for this group are asked to help by supervising the children and by keeping them entertained with structured activities. Survey Team %u2013 The Survey Team is headquartered in the cafeteria of the War Museum. Operations are fluid %u2013 anywhere a Bluesfest Volunteer serves. Title: Surveyor Duties: Surveyors facilitate the completion of Bluesfest Volunteer Satisfaction Surveys by taking the survey to the volunteer where they serve and providing the means for completion. Also, each member of Survey Team will spend one shift entering survey data into the Survey database. Shifts: Weekday shifts are 5pm to 8pm and 7:30pm to 10:30pm. Weekend shifts are 12 noon to 3 pm, 3 pm to 6 pm and 6 pm to 9 pm. Volunteers will be expected to report 15 minutes prior to the shift start to collect gear and receive instructions. Volunteers can expect to remain 15 minutes after the shift ends to brief the Area Leader on any issues, comments or suggestions. Shifts on opening night are mandatory training sessions. No shifts are scheduled for second day. Official surveying will commence on the third day. Join Youth Action for the Annual Vanier Spring Cleanup

Youth Action is calling on local youth to volunteer at the Annual Vanier Spring Cleanup from 9:30a.m. to 1 p.m. on May 1 (BBQ lunch included on behalf of the Vanier Community Service Centre). For safety reasons, it is required that all youth who participate stick together and go to the same cleanup site. Everyone is to wear gloves and no one is to pick up any hazardous materials. Gloves and cleanup materials will be provided. Please note that the adult supervisor from United Way Ottawa is in no way responsible for the youth on this day. Ottawa Riverkeeper is teaming-up Canada Day organizers to green our Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa by eliminating bottled water. The effort, targeted at the over 450 Thousand people expected to attend Canada Day Celebrations in Ottawa, is the largest initiative to reduce bottled water consumption on record. Organizers hope to eliminate 1 Million bottles of water by providing easy access to free, clean, filtered water refilling stations in 5 areas in Ottawa and Hull. Bottled water costs 1000 times more than tap water and requires three times as much water per-liter to produce, which is why it is so important we encourage people to move away from it. Ottawa Riverkeeper is desperately seeking volunteers to help staff these stations. Volunteers will be helping Ottawa set a good example how to eliminate millions of bottles of water from large events and festivals around the world. Walk to Fight Arthritis In May 2010, The Arthritis Society will host fundraising walks in 15 communities across Canada. People with arthritis, their family members, co-workers and friends will come together to walk, celebrate and join the fight to end arthritis. In Ottawa, the Walk to Fight Arthritis presented by the makers of Tylenol ® will take place at Vincent Massey Park on May 16, 2010. Check Point Volunteers - Check point volunteers will be stationed at rest stations along the walk route. They will be responsible for monitoring participant health, handing out water and snacks to participants and keeping the area clean. Check point volunteers must be able to stand for long periods of time. Entertainment Volunteers - Entertainment volunteers will be responsible for helping with the activities that have been planned to enhance the event experience for participants. Positions may include face painting, sampling, crowd control, etc. Floater Volunteers - Floaters might be asked to do any one of the volunteer positions listed here. Every area of the walk will have a busy time %u2013 floaters will be asked to lend an extra hand in these areas at that time. Lunch Station Volunteers - Volunteers at the lunch station will be responsible for setting up the station, distributing food, crowd control, and keeping the area clean. We are seeking another 50 volunteer hours to fulfill our commitment and ensure the arts in schools for another year! Below we have pasted a list of volunteers opportunities most needed by the Ottawa Dragon Boat Foundation. These shifts run Monday-Thursday from 9-5pm. Duties may include setting up tables and chairs, unloading supplies, putting up banners and signs, decorating tents, cleaning signs, delivering notices to local residents, moving equipment and materials or any other duties as assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator or Dragon Boat staff. One of our other charities will be doing the Friday set up with a team in order to get their hours. Barricade attendant is another area that still has a few shifts available over the weekend. Volunteers in this activity will monitor the service lane entrance barricade to ensure only authorized vehicles are driving on site. There is no lifting required and this shift would be suitable for most people. Shifts are Friday 5-10:30pm, Saturday 7am-12:30pm, 12-5:30pm, and 5-9pm. One Sunday the shifts are 7-12:30pm and 12-5:30pm. We still need 2-3 people for these shifts. Alternate Crew is there to cover any shortages in other areas or to catch anything that might have been missed. They require a great deal of flexibility and understanding, as duties are always changing. We need approximately 10 more people for each shift here. Shifts are Saturday 8-1pm, and 12-6pm and Sunday 8-1pm and 12-5. Welcoming Crew volunteers often provide the first impression of the Festival to the public and are extremely important to the overall success of the event. These volunteers help provide a welcoming atmosphere to the Festival for arriving visitors. Volunteers for the Welcoming Crew will help with guiding vehicles to their proper destinations and ensuring visitors have proper passes (where applicable). These volunteers should be comfortable speaking with the public, friendly, and team players. There is no lifting or major physical activity involved in this area. We need a large number of volunteers for this area, and have room for approximately 10-20 people. The shifts run Saturday 6-10am, 10-2pm, and 2-6pm. On Sunday they are 6-11am and 11-4pm. The Docks and Staging area is one of the most popular areas on site. Two separate areas need assistants over the course of the weekend. Individuals volunteering in this area should be energetic, able to work with little supervision, have effective communication skills and be courteous, cooperative, and flexible. Dock volunteers will assist in the loading and unloading of the dragon boats before and after each race. This helps to ensure the safety of all race participants. Individuals in this area should be comfortable around water and/or have swimming skills. Staging volunteers will assist in directing team participants through the team area, checking team member wristbands and head counts, checking paddles for certification sticker, and monitoring the exit area. They ensure the race schedule is kept to. We currently need 5-15 volunteers for this area depending on the shift. The shifts are Saturday 6:30-12:30pm, 12-7pm and the same for Sunday (although may end early. We generally reserve this area for returning volunteers, and I cannot guarantee that those who choose this activity will be assigned to it. We will also need approximately 20 more volunteers for the Event Tear Down. Volunteers will meet on the Beach for this activity. Duties may include folding and stacking tables and chairs removing and storing signage and banners cleaning site of litter loading trucks with supplies Some of this work can be physically demanding or require some heavy lifting (although not all of it, we can accommodate). This shift is Sunday from 4-8pm. We will also need another 10 volunteers for the Monday to help with the clean up.

Ottawa Riverkeeper is looking for a few good speakers. As part of a new outreach program, we are going to be training a group of volunteers for a regular rotation of speaking assignments and presentations. Our goal is to find a group of enthusiastic volunteers free of that oh-so-common aversion to public speaking to help develop and deliver some basic presentations about the river, its history, its challenges, and the Ottawa Riverkeeper%u2019s work to protect it. Every one of our volunteers has their own areas of interest and specialization. One of the key goals of the Speaker%u2019s Bureau program is to match our volunteer speakers with groups who are interested in learning about those topics which interest you most, whether it%u2019s the river%u2019s history, current challenges, specific issues like sewage dumping or dams, or the work and history of the Ottawa Riverkeeper itself. We're looking for volunteers who would like to help facilitate weekly social activities for a group of people with intellectual disabilities who live in the same neighbourhood. We support people to get together socially on Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and on Saturdays from 12:00 to 2:00pm. Assistive Technology Training support volunteer in the elementary or high school classroom assisting students with learning disabilities that use laptops with assisted technology to access the curriculum. Training using Kurzweil 3000 and Dragon Naturally Speaking will be provided for this position. Knowledge or experience in working with children with dyslexia is an asset.
