Bike Festival : Tour La Nuit Road Safety Monitor (Sat. June 1) @ Capital Vélo Fest Inc.

Capital Vélo Fest, an Ottawa based non-profit corporation with the mission to "Inspire People of All Ages To Ride A Bike More Often". We accomplish this by organizing fun cycling events and activities in partnership with governments, cycling advocacy groups and the cycling industry. Our main event is a bicycle festival. Held at Ottawa City Hall on Saturday June 1st, it consists of a Bike Rodeo during the day with cycling information, demonstrations, entertainment and games. In the evening we have a Tour La Nuit, a bike ride under the stars without any cars, on closed off streets. The Road Safety Monitor works to close the streets to vehicular traffic. Working at an assigned intersection, the volunteer assembles a road barricade and places it in the middle of the road. When cars approach, you will explain why and for how long the road is closed, and direct them to turn around. As the cyclists pass, Road Safety Monitors encourage the riders and cheer them on. The riders in turn often shout words of thanks back! When the ride is over, the barricade is disassembled and put back on the side of the road.
