Volunteers needed for Group Homes in Cumberland, Navan and Sarsfield.

Adults with disabilities who are living together in a staff-supported group home are looking for volunteers to visit with them once a week and provide friendship, companionship and advocacy support when needed. Through Citizen Advocacy of Ottawa, volunteer(s) are matched to a group home that houses 3 to 6 people living with disabilities (our %u201Cprotégés%u201D) who have full staff support 24/7. This helps to reduce isolation and vulnerability, and ultimately creates a better quality of life for everyone, regardless of ability. Visit the group home 3-4 times per month. Enjoy the flexibility of making your own schedule and choosing activities that both you and your protégés can enjoy. This can be as simple as playing cards or watching a movie together. IMPORTANT: All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, obtain a police check, and be willing to commit to volunteering for a minimum of 12 months.***Please be sure to include your FULL name and COMPLETE mailing address when submitting your volunteer enquiry application, as we make our matches based on the needs in specific locations throughout the Ottawa area. *** To complete a volunteer advocate enquiry form online, kindly visit: http://www2.citizenadvocacy.org/application.php Thank you for your interest in Citizen Advocacy!!

Citizen Advocacy of Ottawa / Parrainage civique d\'Ottawa /

Citizen Advocacy is dedicated to helping people with disabilities participate fully in community life. We do this by matching volunteer advocates to people with disabilities. Matches participate weekly in activities they both enjoy, planning what they\\\\\\\'ll do and when they\\\\\\\'ll do it at their own convenience. Since 1974, Citizen Advocacy of Ottawa has supported over 2,000 people with disabilities and touched the lives of many more. Because Citizen Advocacy and our volunteer advocates work at an individual level, directly with the people we support, the impact is felt on a personal as well as a community level. Volunteer advocates help increase the self-esteem and self-confidence of persons with disabilities so that they can develop a better sense of overall health. This translates into less dependency and a reduction in the use of costly health and social services. There are more than 300 men and women across Ottawa waiting, on average, 2.5 years to be matched to a volunteer advocate.
