DLO Workshop: Board Basics (Saturday, Sept 26)

Board Basics is a comprehensive introduction for candidates looking to join their first Board of Directors in the non-profit sector. This full-day workshop gives candidates assessment tools to help discern whether a board is a good fit and also covers:
- Board functions and responsibilities
- Meetings and decision-making
- Diversity and inclusion on boards
- Communications and public relations
Amelita Armit is a former President of the Parliamentary Centre and was an Assistant Deputy Minister in the federal and Alberta governments, leading programs in health, social services, human resources management and international development. She is passionate about good governance, having served on the boards of Algonquin College, the City of Ottawa Public Library, the Institute of Public Administration of Canada and Philippine Centre Canada.
Amelita is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth Gold and Silver Jubilee Medals, the Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. She holds a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.

Rideau Community Hub
The former Rideau High School on St. Laurent near McArthur, now a community hub anchored by Odawa Native Friendship Centre and Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre. A continuously evolving space, Rideau Community Hub hosts a wide variety of Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations and services, including Volunteer Ottawa. VO and DLO workshops are held here in a comfortable classroom space.
Rideau Community Hub is easily accessible by car or by the Number 7 OC Transpo bus, which runs between St Laurent Station and Carleton University at approximately 15 minute intervals. The bus stop at St Laurent and Guy is less than 100m from the building. There is free parking available in any unmarked spot to the side or rear of the building. See directions here.
