COVID-19 Update

VO is implementing a plan focused on recruitment and deployment of volunteers to respond to the volunteer needs specific to COVID-19. As part of that plan we will be working with Ottawa Public Health and other agencies to ensure proper screening and training protocals to safeguard the health of those volunteering and those they are assisting. Within the next week, volunteers will be able to register for COVID-19 specific volunteering, including virtual volunteering, food delivery and transportation, and agencies will be able to post and/or send VO their COVID-19 specific needs for volunteer matching. In the interim, Agencies can view resources and additional information on our Members COVID-19 Update and volunteer resources are available at our COVID-19 Volunteer Update.

VO Workshop: Organizational Risk Management

Workshop_Images/Risk managementThe objective of this 2.5 hr. course is to provide participants with a foundational knowledge of, and practical exposure to, risk management terminology, concepts, approaches and tools.  

Course Summary

Set the stage

  • Establish a common base of knowledge, terminology and concepts in relation to risk, internal controls and risk management
  • Discuss risk management in the NFP sector by addressing the following questions:
    • Who is responsible for risk management?
    • What are some common risks  facing NFP organizations and why should we care about these?
    • What are some common risk management challenges in our sector

 Explore practical approaches to risk management

  • Approach to conducting a risk assessment and prioritization exercise
  • Determining risk mitigation strategies
  • Using risk information to support planning and decision making

Group Exercise

  • Use a simple example/scenario to practice using the concepts, approaches and tools the group has been discussing

Your Instructor:

Darren Budd is a Senior Consultant and co-owner of Orbis Risk Consulting. He offers over 20 years of professional experience providing risk management, internal audit, IT audit, governance and process improvement services in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. An active member of the Institute of Internal Auditors, he is Chartered Professional Accountant and Certified Internal Auditor, in addition to a Certifications in Information Systems Audit and Risk Management Assurance.
