VO Workshop: Volunteer Screening

Volunteer ScreeningScreening practices begin when an organization creates a new position. It is an ongoing process used to select volunteers for specific roles, and it should continue as long as a volunteer is involved with the organization. The 10 Steps of Screening give clear guidelines for developing screening policies. These policies show an organization’s commitment to safe and meaningful volunteer engagement.

Learning Objectives

After completing the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify relevant legislation which pertains to volunteer management in their own organizations
  • Assess the background information needed for a given volunteer posting
  • Develop policies and procedures related to privacy of volunteers’ personal information
  • Apply the 10 steps of screening in their volunteer management practice

Instructor

Kathy Magee is the Volunteer Specialist with the Department of Recreation, Cultural and Facility Services for the City of Ottawa, a role she has filled for 15 years.  A graduate of Vanier College and attended Concordia University, she worked for a number of years as a Recreation Therapist prior to specializing in Volunteer Management. Kathy was the past Chair of the Advisory Board for the Event Management Program at Algonquin College, a Mentor in the Event Management Program at Algonquin College and has served on the boards of Volunteer Management Professionals of Canada (VMPC) in the role of Vice President, Provincial Association of Volunteer Resources Ontario ( PAVRO) in the role of Conference Chair and Ottawa Administrators of Volunteer Resources (OAVR) in the role of Chairperson.

To access Zoom on a phone or tablet, visit the relevant App store and search for Zoom. Download Zoom Cloud Meeting. About 5 mins before your meeting or course, open the app, click Join Meeting, and enter in the meeting number you will receive from the organizer.
