VO Workshop: Advocacy by Charities during the Fall 2019 Election

June 25, 2019, 9:30 - 11:30 AM

Advocating_for_your_NFP.jpgYour charitable organization stands for something important. You get your message out all the time, to the press, on social media, and in talking with the public. Advocating on hot topics becomes a lot riskier as we move into an election season if you aren’t alive to the laws regulating advocacy—even non-partisan advocacy. Learn how to navigate the grey zone between partisan and non-partisan messages to protect your organization’s charitable status. Learn about the new, low threshold for election advertising that your charity might accidentally cross with a single non-partisan social media post, and what to do when that happens. Volunteer Ottawa and Drache Aptowitzer LLP want you to tell your organization’s story inside and out of an election period without risking tens of thousands of dollars in potential fines or the 100% revocation tax.

Who should take this course:

  • anyone who works or volunteers for a Registered Canadian Charity and has a hand in public communicates – senior staff, board members, communications staff
  • financial staff involved in tracking spending on election advertising

Location:

United Way Ottawa, LR Room
363 Coventry Road, Ottawa ON

Your Instructors:

Adam Aptowitzer is a tax lawyer with special expertise in the law as it pertains to charities, not-for-profit organizations, and other non-taxable entities anywhere in Canada. In addition to his legal practice, Adam is an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa and has been called to the Bars of both Ontario and Alberta. He has been recognized as among the premier Charity Law lawyers in Canada by the Canadian Lexpert® Legal Directory.

She has a history of contribution in the social sector, including work for the New Brunswick Nature Trust, OUT Law (a LGBT+ law students’ society), the Canadian Cancer Society, and a women’s resource centre. Part I of her series on election rules for not-for-profits and charities has been published in the June edition of the Not-For-Profit News.
