Matthew House Ottawa is a faith-based, volunteer-driven, charitable organization that helps Ottawa’s marginalised population to establish connected, safe, healthy, and dignified homes within our community. We do this by:
1) Refugee Services: Providing shelter, food and refugee settlement assistance, including volunteer opportunities, in a family atmosphere to refugee claimants so that they may begin their journey to independence as members in Canadian society.
2) Furniture Bank: Distributing quality used furniture and household goods to Ottawa’s marginalised population.
Refugee Services provides a safe home environment for up to 9 refugee claimants. We provide a refuge with a home environment and caring support workers. It is a place were people know they are welcome.
Furniture Bank provides quality donated furniture and household items to clients referred by social agencies and support groups throughout the city. MHO: FB currently helps more than 60 families a month furnish their own homes.
Direct Support or “regular support” volunteers are those who assist in the operation of Refugee Services. Direct volunteers take on tasks that typically require regular interaction with Matthew House Ottawa residents. Specific duties range from mentoring new volunteers to assisting residents in planning their bus routes.
Schedule is within Monday to Thursday evening starting from 6:30pm-8:30pm. Can be once a week every week, or every second week.
Volunteer cooks are responsible for providing a weekday evening meal for Matthew House Ottawa residents & volunteers. Groceries are provided, and each week the cook can expect to find meat, vegetables (fresh or frozen), and a starch (rice, potatoes, pasta).
Volunteer cooks can come in on a regular weekly basis, or fill in as needed.
Furniture Bank needs volunteer delivery truck assistants on Saturdays from 10 am – 3 pm.
Every Saturday we deliver free furniture to homes around Ottawa. Join our team and be a part of this worthwhile service to our Ottawa community.
Your role as a truck assistant includes lifting furniture items into homes and apartments, interacting with culturally diverse families and individuals, working as a team with the truck crew. We thrive on professionalism, dignity and respect.
If you can commit to at least one Saturday per month, we would like to hear from you IMMEDIATELY!
