Volunteer Opportunities

The Saint-Louis Residence Volunteer Resources team is recognized for excellence in providing people with an enriching volunteer experience by giving them the opportunity to use their skills and develop relationships while engaging in meaningful activities for our residents. Positions to be filled: In order to meet your needs and those of our residents, several positions are available:  Facilitating group activities  Welcoming visitors at the information desk  Escorting residents (beauty salon, stroll, etc.)  Escorting residents to religious services (mass, sacrement of reconciliation, sacrement of the sick, etc.)  Helping residents during activities (social, recreational, artistic, etc.)  Assisting residents with meals  Volunteer within the interprofessional team  Helping with organizing activities and events (concerts, BBQs, birthdays, bingos, etc.)  Supporting Day program participants  Cognitive stimulation of residents (memory games, board and table games, etc.)  Administrative tasks  Pastoral visits to residents  Friendly visits to lonely residents (reading, music, etc.)  Other interesting positions: animal therapy, snoezelen (multisensory stimulation), music therapy, etc. If you have skills or interests other than those previously mentioned and ideas for the creation of new volunteer positions, please let us know.

Our arts and crafts studio operates primarily on a “drop-in” basis. Patients are able to drop by Tuesday afternoons to colour, paint or simply be “artsy”. This is an ongoing program (friday afternoon) and we need someone who is comfortable assisting patients with their projects in small groups, is creative and energetic. Ideally, this position is suitable for someone with an arts background or has a general interest in arts and crafts and is available and willing to take the lead.

Our classical music program takes place every Monday from 1-3 pm. Patients have the opportunity to temporarily escape as you take them through a musical journey of YouTube videos talking about musical pieces, and bring into context key elements you wish to discuss such as history, the author, instruments etc. As a leader of the program, you would be responsible for downloading musical content on our tablet, planning your weekly session, portering patients etc.
This is suited for someone who shares a passion for music, notably classical. It is also great for someone who is energetic, independent and reliable and who can take on initiative.

One of the simplest ways of connecting the love of music with improving the quality of life of individuals and one’s memory is our Music and Memory Program. Patients have the opportunity to borrow and listen to their favourite, personalised playlists. Volunteers are needed to take the lead on meeting with patients to see if they are interested in the program, be able to download music and playlists. This is an ongoing opportunity and if you are able to commit to 1-2 shifts per week, you would be one of the main liaisons for the program.

Our Volunteer Ambassador program ensures that patients feel welcome as they are greeted at admission within our hospital. Ambassadors make a difference in the lives of patients by providing basic information upon arrival and ensuring their questions are answered. A tour of the facility and general areas are also provided to patients and/or families.
This opportunity is ideal for someone who is a leader, has great interpersonal skills and is independent. Join our volunteer ambassador team by committing to 1-2 shifts per week and make a difference in someone’s life from the start!

Do you enjoy cooking and baking? Are you available Friday mornings? Our cooking program is in need of 2 volunteers on a weekly basis at 10 am to assist patients with this therapeutic recreation activity. No need to have Michelin stars on your resume but certainly an interest in cooking and baking primarily. You will work as part of a team and each week, a different recipe is chosen. You will be responsible for assisting with bringing patients to/from the activity, assist patients with the preparation and mixing of ingredients as well as the set-up/clean-up thereafter.

As a unit model volunteer, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a multidisciplinary team helping patients in a variety of settings. We are looking for volunteers to assist on a weekly basis with this popular game. Bocci is played every Tuesday afternoon from 1-3 pm.
Volunteers would assist with portering patients to and from the activity, assisting with the implementation of the game, setting-up the equipment and writing the points on the board.

This would be a great opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic and energetic as you would be encouraging patient s' participation in a social setting.

We need your help to talk to our patients about their opinions of our care and services. We are looking for volunteers who enjoy talking to patients and who are interested in reading survey questions to them and writing down their answers. We will train you so you will feel comfortable doing this (in about 45 minutes). Our surveys are done in all our programs so we need people who are available at different times of the year, during the day and evenings, and at our three locations (Bruyère Hospital, St.Vincent Hospital and Saint Louis Residence).

Volunteer Role: To connect and demonstrate Bruyère Helpline equipment in clients' homes upon installation as well as during service visits. Bruyère Helpline is a non-profit outreach service of Bruyère Continuing Care that allows a senior or disabled person living independently in the community to call for help by simply pressing a button on a small wireless pendant or bracelet. Position Description: The volunteer visits clients in their homes to connect, maintain, or disconnect Bruy?re Helpline equipment. An installation involves explaining how to use the equipment, determining the optimal location for it, connecting and testing it, and explaining the forms that the client is asked to sign. The volunteer may also visit clients to resolve difficulties they encounter in using the service, or to disconnect and recover Bruyère Helpline equipment when the service is no longer required. Appointments with clients are made by Bruyère Helpline staff. Although most visits are scheduled on weekdays between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., urgent troubleshooting visits are occasionally required in evenings or on weekends. The volunteer uses his/her own personal vehicle to drive to clients' homes. Expenses for use of the vehicle are reimbursed on a per-kilometre basis. Additional Information: This volunteer role would appeal to a mature individual who has an appreciation for the challenges faced by seniors and disabled persons living independently. The small team of volunteers is committed to serving clients with respect and compassion, in keeping with the core values of Bruy?re Continuing Care. Training will be provided. Bilingualism would be an asset, as would basic presentation skills and an interest in the technical aspects of the work.

As a member of the Volunteer Resources team, the volunteer will provide administrative and clerical services in support of various functions of the office. The volunteer is committed to living the mission and values of Bruyère. -Creating a welcoming environment for all visitors; -Answering the phone in a friendly, professional manner; -Assisting with data entry, filing as required; -Providing support for special events; -Sorting mail and faxes; Key competencies for the position: -Strong customer service skills, Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills (a must); -Strong ability to relate with diverse clientele; -Ability to be sensitive to patient and families  needs and requests; -Be flexible and able to handle changing priorities and challenges as they arise; -Must be friendly and outgoing. Requirement: Fluent in French and a good understanding of the English language. Specific training: A Volunteer Resources team member will provide training.

Volunteers are needed to assist with bingo on a regular basis, each monday from 1-3 pm. This entails portering patients to and from the activity and assisting some patients play the game.
