The Glebe Centre is a 254 bed, not-for-profit long term care home dedicated to providing resident care and community outreach services to clients in the Ottawa community. The Glebe Centre provides specialized care to residents, as well as providing activities and programming in an integrated community setting. The Glebe Centre is dedicated to developing and delivering services that support the highest quality of life for residents and clients. Abbotsford House@The Glebe Centre is a Community and Leisure Resource Centre for adults 55 plus. Abbotsford is committed to providing a comprehensive range of programs and services to seniors living in the community. These programs are designed to help people remain healthy and happy in their own homes.

Volunteer Opportunities

We require a gardener who will water and take care of our two courtyard gardens as well as nurture our balcony gardens, as fall arrives gardens will need to be put to bed with proper planning for the following spring. Our residents thrive in our garden areas, they sit with families and enjoy the colors and serenity of the garden area.

Volunteer would support the Snoezelen program, specialized sensory equipment and materials that help residents adapt their responses to sensory stimulation. Provides a safe environment that bridges cognitive, perceptual, behavioural and physical impairments. The volunteer should be sensitive to the needs and abilities of the frail elderly, willing to commit to a training program and understand treatment goals and document observations as required.

We would love to have a volunteer who can play the piano or guitar. A volunteer who is familiar with tunes from the 50's and 60's would be ideal. Our residents love music and listening to long ago tunes can provide social engagement and positive memories.

Virtual reality allows our residents in long term care to travel the world for both reminiscing and new opportunities. With 1 -1 sessions and group settings and live company facilitated residents can engage with past memories. The volunteer makes sure the resident is comfortable with the equipment and engage the resident in conversation about what they are seeing. There is also an element of trivia questions and answers, The volunteer would wipe everything down after each use and recharge the equipment.

Friendly visiting volunteers are an unique group of volunteers who can reach out to seniors and provide support and social interaction. Taking a resident out for a walk around the block or taking them to the garden area for fresh air will provide a huge benefit for the resident who might at times feel isolated.

Our community support programs are once again open to the public and we require a volunteer to help with the ongoing screening. This would include handing out masks, asking required covid questions and making sure visitors have used the hand sanitizer. Mask fittings are needed so we can fit all of our staff with the proper N95 masks. It is done by a machine so not touching is required.

Conduct surveys on each of our units. Volunteer would interview residents as part of our ongoing satisfaction survey. Volunteers would need to be able to use google forms. These surveys are used to determine areas that need improvement.

Every one of our residents has a story to share. As part of our Butterfly concept (person centered care) we are completing biographies/memory boards for our residents. These stories will help staff, families and visitors communicate with residents and allow for an understanding of that individual prior to dementia. Families will help by providing information about their loved one,

Baking provides opportunities for social engagement and sensory stimulation, (sight, smell, taste, touch and hearing.) Baking provides connections to the past and encourages meaningful memories. Smells have a powerful effect, they can be pleasant, strong and relaxing. Involvement with baking allows residents to practice restorative every day skills such as measuring, pouring and stirring.
Following recipes can impact memory. Baking allows residents to be involved in an activity that provides enjoyment and fun.

The music and memory program allows individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia to delve into their past and recover memories that were lost due to dementia. Personal playlists are created based on music that was important to the resident. Each resident has their own iPod and head set. The music comes from different times in the lives of each resident and it is intended to produce memory, emotion and conversation. Please note volunteers would need to show proof of their 2nd vaccine dose.
