VO is recruiting and deploying volunteers to respond to the volunteer needs specific to COVID-19 in Ottawa, Prescott-Russell, Lanark County and Renfrew County while ensuring proper screening and training protocals to safeguard the health of those volunteering and those they are assisting. The Glebe Centre is a 254 bed, not-for-profit long term care home dedicated to providing resident care and community outreach services to clients in the Ottawa community. The Glebe Centre provides specialized care to residents, as well as providing activities and programming in an integrated community setting. The Glebe Centre is dedicated to developing and delivering services that support the highest quality of life for residents and clients. Abbotsford House@The Glebe Centre is a Community and Leisure Resource Centre for adults 55 plus. Abbotsford is committed to providing a comprehensive range of programs and services to seniors living in the community. These programs are designed to help people remain healthy and happy in their own homes.

Volunteer Opportunities

Organization: The Glebe Centre
Abbotsford House our Community Support Agency is looking for an individual to teach a basic Mandarin course for seniors. The position would be for a few hours once per week, time as yet to be determined.

We need mature individuals to read to seniors and foster discussions. We are a long term care home and some of our residents cannot participate in regular programming due to physical limitations. We are hoping eventually to host book clubs as a group activity. The Alphabet program is a reading program where volunteers meet with residents and read favourite books, newspapers or articles.

Adult Day Programs provide supervised programming in a group setting for dependent adults in the early stages of dementia. The clients spend the day at Abbotsford House, our community support agency. The program is structured to provide engaging activities, companionship and social engagement. Volunteers can apply for half days, morning or afternoon. or commit to all day volunteering

Volunteers are needed to support our Tuesday Luncheon Club and provide Kitchen support. The volunteer would be required to volunteer on Tuesdays from 11 - 1:30. There would be prepping, serving lunch to seniors, clean up, handling money and client lists.

We require a volunteer to support our Music Therapist in our Java Music program. The volunteer would engage our seniors in group discussions/reminiscing. The volunteer does not need be able to play an instrument but should be able to sing along and have an interest in music. Training is provided and there is a binder to use for support. Strategic questions are provided to allow residents to reminisce.

We require volunteer medical drivers to drive our clients to their medical appointments. Volunteers would pick up clients at their home and drop them off at appointments. After the appointment is completed the volunteers would take the clients home.

Abbotsford House at The Glebe Centre hosts an annual bazaar as one of their major fundraisers. We need volunteers who love jewelry and would be willing to sort, appraise, clean and price the jewelry as it is donated throughout the year. We also would need the volunteer to help out at the bazaar (the last Saturday in November) as a convener.

As a community support agency we provide lunches and a drop in meeting area for our clients and we need volunteers to make coffee, put out snacks, help clean up and assist with the luncheon clubs. The programs run during the day during the week.

We are looking for highly motivated volunteers who will take initiative to seek our new craft ideas based on materials donated. Can be skilled in any type of craft but be able to create, price and display crafts. Ideas for clever creations would be a great fit. This is not about being taught, we need volunteers who are already skilled in making crafts.

We need a volunteer to sort and price our hand knit and sewn donations. These items are sold at our annual bazaar for fundraising purposes.

We are looking for individuals who enjoy working with fine linens, tablecloths, bed and bath items.Donated goods need to be sorted monthly from (January to June) and more often in the fall (September - November) in anticipation of our annual bazaar. The items donated are sold in our bazaar the last Saturday in November.
