Volunteer Opportunities

Duties:

Helping to process the registration of volunteers.

Distributing goody bags, t-shirts, parking passes and site maps.

Ensuring volunteers know where to find their volunteer stations or contact person.

*You will be asked to attend a mandatory training session on Friday, May 1st.

Duties:

Strong leadership skills are required. 

You will be responsible for a group of 15 assistants working the start/finish line and you must be able to give clear direction and ensure safety of participants and volunteers at the start/finish line.

Each team captain is provided with a copy of their specific area highlighting where the barricades will be placed, where the cones will be placed as well as event fencing along the roadway to aid with safety and guidance. 

Ottawa Police Service will be at key locations as well and will work with the Captains, although they will have their own separate instructions.

Duties:

Safety will be your number one priority.

Responsible for directing all participants leaving the start line and arriving at the finish line, under the direction of the Start/Finish Line Captains.

You will be working at one of two locations (Museum or Brooke Claxton parking lot).
Assist participants load and unload their bikes and strollers.

Duties:

Strong leadership skills are required. 

Travel the route (by bike preferably).

Give support to the route assistants, and liaise with the event manager, police, and medical officials.

Ensure barricades are properly positioned before the start of the event and placed safely off the road as per event officials at the end of the event.

Ensure route assistants pick up all garbage along their stretch of route before releasing them from their assigned post.

Ensure all volunteers from your section have been picked up by the bus and returned to the Canadian War Museum.

Arrange for pickup of any volunteers who may have been left behind.

Duties:

Working along Vimy Place, in and around the Canadian War Museum.

You and a team of volunteers will control traffic, vehicle parking and parking access to reserved spots.

Ensure only vehicles on the VIP parking list are allowed access to park in front of the museum in the barricaded meter parking spots.

You will help direct vehicles to the underground parking. There is NO PARKING in front of the main doors of the museum, only drop off is allowed in the bus turn-around area. Once underground garage area is full, two volunteers will proceed to Booth Street to restrict access to the parking garage. You will inform visitors they will need to park elsewhere.

If the vehicle is bringing supplies to their tent onsite for set up, you will allow them to do so and show them on the site map where they are located. (Set up between 5:30 a.m. – 6:30 a.m.).

Remind drivers to drive slowly as there are many people attending this event.

Wear a safety vest at all times.

This position requires confidence, tact and good customer service skills!

Duties:

Working on event grounds as green team crew.
Responsible for keeping grounds tidy, picking up litter and wear gloves at all times.
Managing recycling, compost and garbage bins, emptying bins when full and replacing bags.
Ensuring people use the proper bins for their waste.

Duties:

Working on the event grounds at the food tent

Assisting with serving lunch under the supervision of our food vendor.

Responsible for making sure food is served promptly and politely.

Ensure your area is kept tidy and wear gloves at all times.

Monitor inflatables and ensure children are taking turns and playing safely.

Supervise the craft tables and maintain order.

Assist if any supplies are needed, fill in/relieve staff if required.

Ensure area is kept clean and tidy.

Being patient and good with children will be your most important role.

Duties:

You will be given a route map and a list of volunteers for each stop. The safety vest and radio you will be given must be returned at the end of the event.

Before Departure:

Please locate the sign with your bus number in the hall outside the cafeteria (inside the Canadian War Museum).
Gather the required number of route assistants for your bus as indicated on the back of the bus sign.
Very important to ensure that all the people on your bus are on time as per your scheduled load/departure time.

On the bus:

Confirm that the bus driver is reachable.
Ensure volunteers get off at the proper location (rest stop volunteers and route assistants).
Give each volunteer their zone number and clearly communicate to them that they must return to the drop off location when it is time for pickup. You will be getting off at the last stop on your section of the route and you will become a route assistant at that location.

You are responsible for ensuring all volunteers are picked up after the event.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Tag all bikes, store them neatly and act as security.
