Abbeyfield House is a non-profit organization that provides accommodation for 10 independent older adults. Each local Abbeyfield Society is comprised of a group of caring volunteers that initiate, support and guide the operations of the Abbeyfield House. Imagine enjoying life with no chores to do, no worries about the house, and delicious home-cooked meals. And, can you imagine having all this for an affordable monthly fee? The Abbeyfield concept is a small community of retired older adults living at Abbeyfield House, enjoying life - companionship when they want it, privacy when they need it.

Abbeyfield Houses Society of Ottawa is a not-for-profit seniors’ residence affiliated with Abbeyfield International, with 1,100 houses in 25 countries worldwide.


The Director of Marketing and Communications is responsible for raising awareness about Abbeyfield House in the community and promoting the house as an alternative housing option for seniors in Ottawa.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Work with the President as primary spokesperson, as well as other directors as needed to raise awareness about Abbeyfield Ottawa
Develop and maintain promotional materials for Abbeyfield Ottawa, including web material, brochures, presentations etc.
Develop and maintain social media presence for the organization
Ensure that all promotional materials are in line with Abbeyfield national and international marketing and communications guidelines
Recruit volunteers, in collaboration with the Director of Volunteer Programs, to support marketing and communications efforts including newsletters and promotional events
Seek opportunities to promote the House in Ottawa and attend community events as appropriate
Assist with the promotion of any fundraising events, including preparation and distribution of communications, posters, signage, emails etc.
Work with the Director of Fundraising and Grants to ensure that adequate recognition is given to granting organizations and major donors

Administrative

Attend monthly meetings and present a report to the Board
Keep records of all promotional material and events
Develop communications plan and present to the Board
Seek Board approval for all marketing and communications products
Work with the Director of Grants and Fundraising to develop thank-you letters for granting organizations and to recognize major donors on the website
Provide support to the Director of Residency in the promotion of Tea & Tours for potential residents and interested community members

Qualifications:

A background in marketing or communications is an asset;
Strong initiative;
Good research skills;
Strong written and oral communications skills are required.

Abbeyfield House Parkdale is looking for a residency committee secretary that will assist with:
--Liaising with the Chair, House Manager and Committee Members to plan meetings
--Receiving agenda items from committee members
--Circulating agendas and reports
--Taking minutes of Residency Committee and meeting with residents
--Circulating minutes at least one week prior to meeting
--Checking that agreed actions are carried out.
--Keeping up-to-date contact details (i.e. names, addresses and telephone numbers) for the management committee and (where relevant) ordinary members of the organization.
--Filing minutes and reports
--Compiling lists of names and addresses that are useful to the organisation, including those of appropriate officials or officers of voluntary organisations.
--Keeping a record of the committee's activities
--Keeping a diary of future activities

The Residency Committee meets once per month for 3 hours (typically the 2nd Wednesday of the month, in the morning).
Time commitment: 6 hours per month.

This position is ideal for someone with understanding of meeting procedures and skills in minute taking.

Are you a retired or working individual looking for an exciting volunteer opportunity? Abbeyfield Houses Society of Ottawa is currently looking for someone to join our Board of Directors as the Director of Property Management.

We are a not-for-profit organization that provides low cost housing for seniors with about 1100 houses around the world, 25 of them in Canada, and one here in Ottawa.

Duties include:

- Oversee the maintenance and repair of the facility
- Manage staff and volunteers involved in larger maintenance
- Repair and upgrade projects for our 100 year old heritage building
- Conduct/coordinate routine inspections of the building
- Work with the Director of Grants and Fundraising to seek external funds for any projects
- Attend a monthly board meeting

*Must have knowledge of general building maintenance and repair.
*Must have experience developing statements of work, evaluating proposal submissions, hiring and managing the work of contractors.

We are looking for a new member for our Residency Committee. Must have previous experience with seniors.

Description:
• Participate in monthly residency meetings on the second Wednesday afternoon of the month from 1:00pm to 3:00pm.

• Discuss agenda items including issues relating to the wellbeing of current residents, problem solving, planning events, and handling enquires from people in the community who are interested in living at Abbeyfield.

• There is also an evening Residents' Meeting once every two months. This meeting gives the residents an opportunity to voice any ideas, questions or concerns they may have.
