Petition canvassers

Organization: Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society - Ottawa Valley chapter

Commitment: Short term less than 6 months

Availability: Flexible

Language Preference: English

Number of Positions Available: 5

Location: Hull/Gatineau

Deadline: Mar 16, 2018

CPAWS Ottawa Valley has been working to obtain increased protection for Gatineau Park for several years. While there exists support for protecting the park in political circles, we need to show broad community support in order for legislation to be eventually tabled and adopted by Government. To that end, we have renewed our push to collect signatures on a petition asking the Federal government to take steps to protect the park. The legislative framework we are seeking would not limit public enjoyment of the park, but rather ensure park land cannot be sold or developed without public input and parliamentary approval. We are seeking approximately 5 people to canvass for signatures at various locations in Ottawa and Gatineau (downtown, Byward Market, campuses and at community events and festivals). We will provide the volunteer with a briefing on the issues, English and French petition sheets, clipboards, pens and handout material to leave with people (cards and stickers). The volunteer should be friendly and outgoing and not afraid to ask people for support. Bilingualism would be an asset, but not absolutely necessary. The opportunity is flexible in terms of time and location. Our ultimate goal is to collect 10,000 signatures in the next few months.

How will this volunteer opportunity benefit you?
This is a great way to get involved and support Gatineau Park and its protection. Canvassing allows the volunteer to be outdoors and active by walking around and talking to people. It is also a good way to learn about the environmental sector and the work of organizations like CPAWS and how we influence public policy.

How will the organization benefit?
Canvassing is vital to growing our supporter base and showing broad support for the protection of the park. It is labour intensive and, as such, we do not have the resources to dedicate staff time to this work.
