Since 1985, Upstream Ottawa has been a not-for-profit agency that empowers youth and adults with mental health challenges in their pursuit of a fulfilling life. Our agency is comprised of Mental Health Case Managers committed to providing the highest client centered services.

Upstream is seeking for volunteer handy woman/ handy man. The volunteers will ensure that Upstream clients are living in a safe and well-maintained environment, by donating their time to perform a variety of simple repairs, odd jobs both outside and inside the client’s home, as assigned by the Program Coordinator. This opportunity is on an as-needed basis and has the unique ability to work around one’s schedule. All assignments occur Monday-Friday during business hours based on client requests and volunteer availability.

A snapshot of what you do:
o Performs a variety of minor repairs and odd jobs both outside and inside the client’s home, as assigned by the Program Coordinator;
o A few task examples are: Fitting/checking smoke detectors (batteries); Tightening doorknobs, locks, adjusting hinges; Replacing light bulbs
o Purchasing necessary supplies for repairs. Will be reimbursed with receipt.
o Debrief Program Coordinator as necessary;

Bonus skills and abilities
o Assist clients with moving on occasion
o Have access to vehicle in order to deliver furniture on occasion

Applicants for this opportunity must have:
o Experience in the skilled trades
o Experience and ability to complete minor repairs and odd jobs
o Vulnerable Records Check
o Two references (that can prove character for specific position)

A successful applicant:
o Is at least 18 years of age
o Has access to reliable transportation
o Has access to appropriate tools (preferable)
o Is warm, friendly, courteous manner
o Is positive people oriented personality
o Is punctual and reliable
o Understands the needs, interests and concerns Upstream clients
o Has the ability to work without supervision
o Is non-judgmental and accepting of diverse values and beliefs
o Has emotional resilience, stability and maturity
o Has good communication skills in English
o Maintains confidentiality
o Can accept and abide by the limits and boundaries of the program
