Bookstore Volunteer (Customer Service)


Organization: Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association

Commitment: Long term (6 months to a year)

Availability: Days

Language Preference: English. Bilingual is an asset.

Location: Ottawa - Central

Deadline: Mar 31, 2020


Required Hours: 3-4 hours per week

Availability: Monday-Friday between 11AM-2:30PM; Saturday between 10AM-2PM; Sunday between 1PM-4PM. Schedule will be determined with manager.

Language: English proficiency required; bilingual is an asset

Location: 120 Metcalfe Street, Ottawa, ON K1P 5M2

The Friends of the Ottawa Public Library Association (FOPLA) requires volunteers to assist with operations of their used bookstore at the Main Branch of the Ottawa Public Library.

Volunteers in this role will be primarily responsible for providing excellent customer service to FOPLA’s customers, including answering customer questions, helping customers to locate books, selling books, making change, and light administrative tasks. Volunteers may also be required to interact with library staff as needed, and potentially re-stock shelves as needed.

Required Skills: Must be friendly and courteous with the public; previous customer service experience is an asset; knowledge of books and book genres; must have the ability to make change and be comfortable with cash handling procedures; must have good organizational skills.

Volunteers are required to provide their own transportation to their volunteer location.

Volunteers enable FOPLA to carry out our mission of raising funds to support the Ottawa Public Library (OPL), which allows OPL to enhance their programs and services. Our volunteers sort, shelve, and sell books, but also help our bookstores run smoothly by serving on local committees as Managers or Treasurers, or forming our Board of Directors to carry out special projects that help us grow and evolve.
