Looking for a rewarding volunteer experience? We are looking for an enthusiastic and energetic volunteer for our Children's class on Saturday mornings! Our dedicated team of class volunteers are integral to the team by encouraging students to get their groove on in a safe and inclusive environment.

What are classes like?
This program gives children the opportunity to develop their own interests in creative expression, explore their unique styles of moving, gain dance skills such as cause and effect, musicality, extension, and repetition, plus create dances within an integrated setting in a supportive and fun atmosphere. Live percussion inspires children to move in this class.

The classes are structured so as to offer a balance between expression and dance technique. Students are assisted by adult teaching assistants with disabilities, providing valuable role models to young dancers.

Creative dance is extremely effective in teaching children communication skills. For example, by linking emotions to dance – “how would you dance when you are angry… happy… scared…” – we give children the opportunity to communicate through non-verbal means. We have created dances over the years using themes from polar bears and chickens to the human skeleton, from doctors’ offices to beautiful bodies.

How will this volunteer opportunity benefit you?
"Volunteering with the children's rec class has been by far one of the most enriching volunteer experiences I've had the privilege of being a part of. On a personal level, I gained a tremendous amount of experience working with a diverse group of children, which although challenging at times, made me very self-aware of my perceptions of communications with individuals of varying exceptionalities. The children were perhaps the best teachers, showing me what it meant to practice inclusivity. I can recall numerous interactions in which participants were role models to each other, and practiced a level of outreach and support beyond their years. Attending the class came to be the best part of my week, and that in huge part had to do with the amazing teaching staff and participants of the program. In medicine we're taught to cure or rehabilitate, and we can forget how special "differences" are. The rec classes have been such an inspiration as a safe space to celebrate differences, but more so, a space for kids to be kids"
