DescriptionAre you a retired or working individual looking for an exciting volunteer opportunity? Abbeyfield Houses Society of Ottawa currently has vacancies on our Board of Directors.
We are a not-for-profit corporation that provides low cost housing for seniors with about 1100 houses around the world, 25 of them in Canada, and one here in Ottawa. Our volunteer Board of Directors is seeking a Director of Human Resources. The work involves a few hours a month (mainly phone & email telework) and attendance at one monthly evening Board meeting. Duties include:
The Director of Human Resources is responsible for coordinating human resources for all paid staff and volunteers including providing orientation, scheduling, conducting regular performance reviews (including salary reviews) and managing any complaints.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintains and up-dates job descriptions for all paid staff
Develops, implements and updates all human resources policies and procedures for the organization including, but not limited to, the following:
Harassment and violence
Code of Conduct
Health and Safety
Recruitment and selection of employees and volunteers
Discipline and termination
Recommends to the Board changes to policies and procedures that would improve the organization
Oversee the House Manager and the Volunteer Coordinator and assume some or all duties in their absence
Provide direct supervision to paid staff including the following:
Providing appropriate, supportive supervision and on-going feedback
Ensuring that staff are properly trained for their work
Maintaining a healthy work environment
Conduct performance evaluations
Handling disciplinary issues
Communicate regularly with the Director of Residency regarding any resident concerns or requests about staff volunteers
The Director is responsible for attending monthly meetings and providing a report
Maintain staff and volunteer records and appropriate paperwork for all human resources decisions
Work with appropriate Directors and volunteers to ensure that all human resources policies comply with Human Rights, Employment/Labour Standards and all other legislation.
Seek Board approval for all human resources policies that have legal implications for the Board such as screening policies and harassment policies
Ensure that funds are budgeted for training and development and operation of the house including food and cleaning supplies.
Work with Treasurer on salary forecasting for the annual budget
We are funded mainly through grants from organizations like City of Ottawa, Habitat for Humanity, Home Depot etc. and have had an interesting variety of professional individuals on our board including an accountant, lawyer, nurse, student, communications person, managers, executives, secretaries and retirees. It is an interesting and enjoyable way to give back to the community and also to keep up one’s management skills.
