Description

Student Links is a mentoring program for high school students with intellectual disabilities, where we connect them to members of their community who can act as mentors and help the student discover their passion, meet new people, achieve their goals, and explore possible roles for their future.

We are currently seeking a volunteer mentor in the fields of reading, writing, blogging, and library studies.

The volunteer will be paired up one-to-one with a young man who wants to gain independence, develop practical skills to help towards his future, and explore his interests in reading.

Possible ideas for the on-going mentorship would include:
- joining a book club together, or creating one and reviewing books and reading materials together
- creating book reviews for young adult/adult novels for the local library websites, creating independent websites/blogs to home the reviews
- volunteering/helping at a local library - cataloging items, arranging books and materials on shelves
- visiting new and used bookstores and book mobiles
- writing your own stories on various subjects and doing research
- general independence training - taking the bus to different stores and libraries, developing skills to help him navigate his world
- taking care of pets - walking a small dog or learning how to care for cats
- subsequently writing, blogging, reading up on animal and pet care
