The mandate of the Kiwanis Music Festival – NCR is to encourage and promote the enjoyment and study of music in our community’s young people through the production of an annual competitive music festival. The Festival runs a full three weeks every April, featuring over 3,000 entries (over 10,000 participants) and managed by a small part-time staff and over 400 volunteers. The participants compete for over $50,000 in scholarships and trophies. It takes place at various churches and schools around Ottawa. Our Festival concludes with the Highlights Concert, a full-length concert held at Algonquin Commons Theatre featuring some of the best and most entertaining of the young participants. We are a registered charity supported by donations, sponsorships, and participant registration fees and governed by a voluntary Board of Directors.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Front of House Volunteers are the “face” of the Festival – the first people that everyone sees when they attend one of our competitions. You sell the tickets at the door, direct participants and the audience members to where they’re supposed to be, and have the responsibility of managing the money during your shift.

The Festival this year runs from April 2 - May 4, usually with 4 – 6 venues running at any given time. For example, on April 9 we have Senior Piano, Intermediate Piano, Music Theatre, Brass, Bands and Senior Strings competitions running all day in different venues and we would need at least 2 volunteers for each time slot (see below) for each venue for that day – we like to pair up our volunteers so you have more fun and can leave the table for a break if needed.
You can sign up for as many time slots as your schedule allows. If you give us a preference of type of music (piano, strings, music theatre, etc.) we’ll try to get you in but can’t guarantee because there are so many volunteers.
