Christie Lake Kids is a non-profit organization that services Ottawa's at risk children and youth ages 6-17. Helping Ottawa families for over 96 years. 
We operate our S.T.A.R (skills through arts and recreation) after-school and weekends. Our programs run from September to May. 
Currently recruiting primary instructors and volunteers to help in our west, east and central communities.

Volunteer Opportunities

Organization: Christie Lake Kids
Become a mentor and positive role model for youth ages 13-17. The Christie Lake Kids Leaders in Training (LIT) program motivates youth to pursue self confidence through opportunities for team building and personal growth. Mature volunteers are needed for on-site supervision and engagement, to offer support and guidance. We have three groups that meet weekly: We are in need of volunteers for our Rosemont Branch of the Somerset West CHC (30 Rosemont ave.). Interested volunteers must choose one group to work with, Monday Grade 9, Tuesday Grade 10 and Wednesday Grade 11 (Subject to change) and be available to attend 1 night a week consistently on a weekly basis. Some experience with strengths-based youth work is preferred but not necessary; we welcome anyone with enthusiasm for making a positive and direct contribution to our mission.

The STAR program is currently looking for enthusiastic and dedicated volunteers to assist in facilitating the after-school junior rockers program Starting late Sept. on Wednesdays from 5-7 pm at the Carlington Gym, 1520 Caldwell Avenue and from 4-5pm at the Dempsey Community Centre, 1895 Russell Rd, Ottawa. Rockers is a program that focuses on teaching children social skills, exposing them to different kinds of cooperative activities, initiative games, non-competitive games and activities to encourage children in positive social interactions and promote and teach positive social skills, teamwork, sportsmanship and cooperation.

The Christie Lake Kids STAR program is currently looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated volunteer to assume the primary instructor's position, as the lead for our after-school cooking program on Mondays from 4:30-6:00 pm at the Dempsey Community Centre (1895 Russell Road). This program caters to children ages 6-12 who are interested in learning how to cook simple and nutritious meals. The primary instructor is expected to work in tandem with our Program Supervisor to plan and teach a recipe through the cooking program, while demonstrating the finer points of food preparation to the participants and the other volunteers, and supporting youth through skill acquisition and fostering confidence in the kitchen. We are looking for someone who is able to commit on a weekly basis and encourage individuals who are interested in working with youth to apply, especially those who are comfortable with the instruction of cooking and kitchen fundamentals, though no formal experience is required.

We are looking for 2-3 Primary Instructors who are experienced in and would be comfortable leading programming for kids ages 6-8, 9-12 or 13-17.

These leadership roles are an exceptional way to make an impact on an organization and the lives of kids and youth.

Time Commitment: Approximately 2-4 hours per week for one full STAR year, running September to May (3 sessions x 8-10 weeks/session).

Major Responsibilities:
• Plan and facilitate age appropriate skill building activities
• Supervise program volunteers and participants
• Model social skills and appropriate behaviour
• Champion T-REC: Initiate Check-in and Check-outs and focus on skill development
• Ensure proper set-up and clean-up of program space
• Debrief with program volunteers and the on-site program supervisor
• Direct and support program support volunteers
* Experience instructing program-specific skills to children/youth is preferred.

Are you passionate about helping kids learn new skills? Do you lead with energy and enthusiasm? Do you love a sport or art that you want to pass your love for onto others? If so we are starting our initial Fall Program Volunteer Intake for Christie Lake Kids STAR (Skills through Arts and Recreation) programs!

Starting with us early ensures we have a great spot for you in our programs and you get time for orientation and have lots of time to work out scheduling and preparation for helping kids in need.

We are also looking for: Dynamic Youth Leadership Volunteers who have a skill set they would like to coach and mentor youth: be it marketing, cooking, office work, tour guide etc.

We are also looking for a few Primary Instructors who are experienced in and would be comfortable leading programming for kids ages 6-8, 9-12 or 13-17 specifically in Cooking, Gym Programs and Leadership.
