Citizen Advocacy is dedicated to helping people with disabilities participate fully in community life. We do this by matching volunteer advocates to people with disabilities. Matches participate weekly in activities they both enjoy, planning what they'll do and when they'll do it at their own convenience. Since 1974, Citizen Advocacy of Ottawa has supported over 2,500 people with disabilities and touched the lives of many more. Because Citizen Advocacy and our volunteer advocates work at an individual level, directly with the people we support, the impact is felt on a personal as well as a community level. Volunteer advocates help increase the self-esteem and self-confidence of persons with disabilities so that they can develop a better sense of overall health. This translates into less dependency and a reduction in the use of costly health and social services. There are more than 300 men and women across Ottawa waiting, on average, 2.5 years to be matched to a volunteer advocate.

Volunteer Opportunities

Peter was unlucky enough to have a car accident many years ago, and now lives with disabilities. He has a great sense of humour and loves hearing and telling jokes. He also enjoys listening to music, playing cards and watching hockey. He would like a volunteer Advocate to meet with him each week to go for walks, watch hockey, share jokes, and music tracks.

Julie is a bright articulate woman in her late 50s. She has multiple sclerosis and unfortunately the disease means that she can no longer speak. However, she communicates well using her computer and enjoys reading, gardening and running the publishing desk for her church. She would like a volunteer Advocate who can spend time socialising with her each week and who is willing to occasionally make phone calls on her behalf. We have over 300 people with disabilities in Ottawa who are feeling isolated and alone, wishing they had a volunteer friend and advocate through our organization. Most of them will have to wait two and a half years to be matched. Will you help one person to get off of our waiting list?

Being a volunteer advocate is convenient, flexible, and rewarding. We match people one-on-one, who live in locations convenient to each other, and with similar interests and shared activities. You spend time with your match, with the possibility of also including your family and friends. You get together three or four times a month at your convenience, and do what friends do: go for coffee, take a walk, or get out to an event. This can have a huge impact in the life of someone with a disability who is feeling isolated and alone.

As a volunteer you need to be over the age of 18 and make a minimum commitment of 12 months to this role [Note: your status in Canada may affect your ability to make this commitment e.g. visitor visa, student visa, refugee claimant]. Preparation and ongoing support are provided.
