Volunteer Opportunities

Are you a student, professional, or retiree looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity that will have a positive impact on the life of a newcomer to Canada? Tasks which are simple for Canadians, such as taking the bus, talking to a doctor, attending a parent-teacher interview, or requesting repairs from a landlord, can be very difficult for new immigrants and refugees who lack English language skills.

Most newcomers referred to our program are isolated for different reasons; they may have young children to care for, possibly care for a sick or disabled family member, have a disability or health issue, work long hours, or face other barriers.

English Language Tutoring for the Ottawa Community is looking for English speaking volunteer tutors to provide one-to-one English language tutoring to adult immigrants and refugees who cannot attend English classes. We are currently looking for tutors to teach in the homes of students located in Ottawa South-East (Heron Gate, Blossom Park, Emerald Woods).

No prior teaching experience is necessary; training and ongoing support from our qualified TESL certified Education Counsellors is provided.

Volunteers interested in becoming an ELTOC tutor are asked to commit to tutoring 2 to 3 hours per week for a minimum of 10 months after being matched with a student.

For more information please visit our website at www.eltoc.ca.
