The AIDS Committee of Ottawa (ACO) works to provide support, prevention, education and outreach services from an integrated anti-racism anti-oppression social justice framework that promotes the holistic wellbeing of those living with, affected by, impacted by and at risk of HIV/AIDS in Ottawa.

Volunteer Opportunities

Objective:
• To help in creating accessibility to our services by offering free childcare for service users when required

Responsibilities:
• Engage children and facilitate safe and age appropriate recreational activities, games and group activities
• Help with serving food to children
• Encourage cooperation and sharing among children
• Help keep children’s’ space tidy and clean
• Flexibility to pick up other tasks as they come up
• Childcare volunteers are not responsible for feeding, toileting, or disciplining children. We ask that you connect with parents for support around these issues.

Required Qualities and Skills:
• Comfort and ability to work with children ages 5 to 15
• Ability to form relationships with and engage children in play or other activities
• Friendly personality
• French language skills an asset

Other Requirements:
• Police/Vulnerable sector record check (we can provide a form and reference to wave the fees if you don’t already have one)

Time Commitment and Place:
• 4 hour weekend shifts (2-6pm, third Saturday of each month), at least once every 3 months, with possibilities of additional shifts at other times i.e. special events, Women’s Socials etc.
• Living Room (Drop-in Centre at 19 Main St) or various locations for outings

Training and Orientation:
• HIV 101

Evaluation and Follow-up:
• On-going discussions and support as required
