Volunteer Opportunities

** This opportunity is ideal for a volunteer duo - e.g. friends, parent/child, siblings. **

Volunteer is responsible for the facilitation of a social group that runs every Tuesday from 6:30-8:00 pm. Arrive at 6:00 pm for set-up/prep. Depart by 8:30 pm following clean-up. (Staff can be available to run program if ever volunteer is unavailable.)

Week 1: Coffee House
We try to book a musician who is happy to come in and sing/play (typically on acoustic guitar or ukulele). Space is open for participants to perform/share as desired. Volunteer is responsible for supporting the participation of community members and preparing/serving coffee/tea/snack. Bonus if you have musical skills to share with our community!

Week 2: Family Movie Night
Volunteer is responsible for setting up the TV and movie (previously selected), as well as preparing popcorn/drinks. (Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.)

Week 3: Supper Club
Volunteer is responsible for preparing (or if not skilled in the kitchen, then simply re-heating) a simple meal (previously selected) that will be shared by community members. Volunteer is also responsible for welcoming participants, setting out food (including additional dishes brought by participants), and cleaning up after the meal.

Week 4: Surprise! (Miscellaneous activities each month)
Volunteer is responsible for facilitating a variety of engaging activities for participants. Past activities have included: Bingo, dance parties, games nights, arts activities, and (free) outings. Bonus if the volunteer wishes to take ownership of planning each surprise activity.

The ideal candidate has experience facilitating groups and is comfortable building relationships of trust with participants, while engaging them in activities.

The successful applicant must be comfortable working with a diverse demographic, and sensitive to the challenges and needs of those living in social housing.

Deadline: Sep 30, 2019
Support a team of Chaplaincy volunteers to serve a nutritious and delicious brunch to members of the Carlington community by acting as a City of Ottawa keyholder from approximately 8:30-12 on the third Saturday of each month.

We offer our community meals in a community centre located at 1475 Caldwell; it is widely used by community groups, but owned by the City of Ottawa, which means that our key holder volunteer follows City of Ottawa guidelines for the opening/closing and use of the space. The successful applicant must be comfortable following and enforcing City of Ottawa safety and operational guidelines, including locking and alarming the space.

Each month, a different team of volunteers brings the food for the brunch, prepares it on-site, and cleans-up after the event. Because the teams vary each month, the Volunteer Liaison supports each group of volunteers with any questions they have about set-up, preparation, serving, and clean-up. Our key holder is also the liaison for the volunteer group and the community members who attend the brunches. Our community brunches draw about fifty residents living in the Carlington Community.

We are seeking an adult volunteer who:
- has experience leading and supporting a team (of volunteers/staff)
- has excellent communication skills
- is punctual and reliable
- is comfortable establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries to ensure the space is safe for all participants (large group)

Additional Requirements: Must be over the age of 18, CPR / First Aid / Police Record Check required; can be acquired free of charge after application.

The Carlington Community Chaplaincy (CCC) supports people in the Carlington community who live in social housing or are on low incomes. The successful applicant must be comfortable working with a diverse demographic, and sensitive to the challenges and needs of those living in social housing.
