Volunteer Opportunities

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County (DSORC) is currently seeking two Co-Facilitator Volunteers, with one position open in our Arabic Community Support Group and one in our Rural Ottawa South Support Group.

The Caregiver Support Group Facilitator is expected to support the DSORC mission to alleviate the personal and social consequences of living with dementia by providing a safe and welcoming environment for caregivers’ discussion and support.

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

• Facilitate group discussion
• Inform the participants about the objectives and ground rules for the group
• Empower participants by discussing the important role they play for themselves and each other
• Involve participants through invitation and inclusion
• Initiate, clarify and summarize discussions as required
• Harmonize to reduce tension and encourage participants to explore differences
• Set up room and coordinate logistics
• Complete support group report including attendance and debrief with staff lead

Qualifications and Skills:

• Proficiency in English and/or French
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience in group facilitation
• Professionalism
• Respect for diversity and cultural awareness and sensitivity
• Effective listening skills, empathy, and adaptability
• Ability to work collaboratively with co-facilitator and supervisor and take initiative
• Reliability
• Respect for the boundaries of the position
• Experience as a caregiver is an asset
• Education in the social sciences is an asset

Screening:

Successful applicants will submit a volunteer application form and provide a valid Vulnerable Sector Police Record check. An interview and reference checks will be conducted as part of the application process.

Position suitability evaluation and approval will be conducted by supervisory staff after completion of the volunteer application process with the Volunteer Coordinator. This evaluation period extends throughout training/mentorship prior to final approval of volunteer assignment.

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County (DSORC) is currently seeking two volunteers to host our upcoming Science of Dementia Educational Session.

Time Commitment:
Must be available July 11th 2019, 12:30 PM – 6:30 PM
*plus attending general orientation and training as needed

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

• Work closely with DSORC staff to secure all logistical details
o appropriate educational materials, name tags, refreshments, etc.
• Work with DSORC staff to successfully deliver two Science of Dementia sessions
o French session: 1:00 – 3:00 PM | English session: 3:30 – 5:30 PM
• Responsible for the set up/ take down of tables and chairs, and general clean up
• Greet and welcome participants at the door and provide any relevant materials
o e.g. name tag, handouts
• Engage in conversation with participants as appropriate
• Provide general housekeeping guidance

Qualifications and Skills:

• Bilingualism in English and French is preferred
• Compassion, understanding and awareness of dementia
• Professionalism and a positive disposition
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Reliability and punctuality
• Maintain a positive, supportive, and welcome environment learning
• Maintain confidentiality of all participants
• Basic knowledge of DSORC programs and services (training provided)
• Accommodate participants with health and mobility challenges (as able)

Successful applicants will submit a volunteer application form and provide a valid Criminal Police Record check. An interview and reference checks will be conducted as part of the application process with the Volunteer Coordinator.

Successful applicants will be provided with Orientation Training in addition to role-specific training from their supervisor.

The Dementia Society of Ottawa and Renfrew County (DSORC) is currently seeking a volunteer co-facilitator for our Motiview program. Sessions are to take place Tuesday mornings and will run approximately 1.5 hours in length.

The Motiview volunteer is responsible for assisting DSORC staff in running the program in a manner which is safe, supportive, and aligned with The Dementia Society’s mission and values.

Motitech is the name of a Norwegian company that has developed a product called “Motiview”. The product was designed for older people and people with dementia. The product is an easy-to-use motivational tool that stimulates people with dementia to be more physically and cognitively active.

By using an exercise bike (we are using foot pedals and people will sit in a chair), video and sound, users can take cycle trips through familiar surroundings and life memories. The library has over 1000 videos which help bring memories to life through sensory impression and it further inspires physical activity.

Primary Role and Responsibilities:

• Light room preparation, including arranging chairs and positioning foot pedals for participants
• Greet participants, distribute name tags, and direct participants to seating area
• Assist DSORC staff with introductions and Motiview demonstrations
• Assist, involve, and encourage participants throughout each session as required
• Arrange for a break period as required
• Assist DSORC staff with room clean-up following each session

Qualifications and Skills:

• Proficiency in English and/or French
• Teaching/training delivery experience
• Understanding of dementia and the daily living challenges persons with dementia (PWD)s face
• Experience as a caregiver of a person with dementia (desired)
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to engage in conversation
• Comfortable using basic technology
• Comfortable with small groups
• Professionalism and a positive disposition
• Reliability and punctuality
• Maintain confidentiality of all participants
• Basic knowledge of DSORC programs and services (training provided)
• Accommodate participants with health and mobility challenges (as able)
